22 07 2008

For the purposes of fun, entertainment, variety and general awesomeness, we’ve invited some savage bands to come down to SoundCheck and DJ. Get into it. Oh, and more special guest DJs along with what’s listed here will be announced soon.

July 31st
HAM SANDWICH
+ SoundCheck DJs
Yup, Podge and Niamh Sandwich will be in the house playing you a selection of their favourite tunes. We have no idea what to expect, but it should be something along the lines of a Buckfast-soaked indie rumble.

August 7th
Queen Kong V You’re Only Massive
+ SoundCheck DJs
With ‘Dot-Dash’ – the highly anticipated collaborative album between QK and YOM – about to drop, SoundCheck will play host to two of the most intriguing bands around. You’re Only Massive announced just today that they are to split as a band, so this SoundCheck party is being billed by the band as their ‘last hurrah’. You’re not going to want to miss that, are ya?

August 14th
C O D E S
+ SoundCheck DJs
As soon as they get back from wrecking the gaff with a series of London gigs, C O D E S will be dropping in to DJ. With music epic enough to make Muse blush, we can expect some loud, fun and rocking indie from these dudes.

As usual, all of these SoundCheck evenings go from 7pm – 11pm, are free in, and feature tasty cakes, two-for-one cocktails, good tunes and good people.

SoundCheck in the Evening Herald
July 10, 2008 by unarocks

Check out the Herald today to see a lovely photee of SoundCheck queen Sarah J Fox and a nice mention in a great piece on new club nights by the awesomeness that is Tanya Sweeney.

Tanya sez:
“Spy was once the sole preserve of house/dance DJs, but is now home to two most exciting pop/rock club nights. Ostensibly taking its lead from Crawdaddy’s ever-popular Antics night, a host of guitar-loving tastemakers have reclaimed the venue as their own. Each Thursday, blogger Una Mullally and former JJ72 babe Sarah Fox throw together a terminally hip playlist of new tunes at SoundCheck.”

RAWK ON!

Tanya also bigs up Summer Of Love @ Spy on Friday, which is deadly by the way, check it out!

Roisin Dubh

21 07 2008

We played at the Roisin Dubh as part of the Galway Arts Festival on friday. I asked Adrian what the name meant, not noticing the GIANT BLACK ROSES EVERYWHERE. I’m a clever kitten.
Anyway, it was a brilliant gig, and we hung out afterwards for the coolest club in the west, STRANGE BREW.
I managed to bribe the legend that is Gugai into spinning some tunes at Soundcheck wa hey!
watch this space.

You’re Only Massive call it a day
Their MySpace says:

“I am Megan.
Maebh and I had a chat today while perusing some fashion magazines.
We talked about the direction Y.O.M. is taking. We both agree that it has evolved past our lovably ramshackle beginnings, with my bandy decks and scratched records, not-practising in my bedroom.
We are at a crossroads, just like the seminal Britney Spears movie Crossroads.
I am more interested in trying to develop my writing and dedicate a chunk of my life to that, while Maebh is eager as a beaver to develop musically.
I will continue to contribute to Y.O.M., beginning with a Y.O.M. zine, which will be out around the time Dot-Dash comes out.

We’re playing in Leitrim and Roscommon this Saturday, and at a DYT fundraiser in Crawdaddy on Sunday, Our final gig together will be in Trickster in Berlin on Saturday 26th; although I will be doing a DJ set on the 7th of August at Soundcheck at the Spy bar.
After these gigs, Maebh will start working alone on a new set to promote Dot-Dash, the split LP with Queen Kong.

I of course wish Maebh all the best in her future endeavours, and will refrain from anonymously badmouthing her on the internet.
As Destiny’s Child so memorably sang,
“I’m not gon’ hate on you in the magazines
(I’m betta than that)
I’m not gon’ compromise my Christianity
(I’m betta than that)
You KNOW I’m not gon’ diss you on the internet-
CAUSE MY MAMA TAUGHT ME BETTA THAN THAT.”

Thanks to everyone who came to gigs and said nice things.
Lots of Massive love,
megan.”
